BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Claire: No Changes Planned

Dodger executive vice president Fred Claire says he is happy with the club and has no plans to make any changes to the Dodger roster.

“We need all 25 players who are on this team and I’m not looking at making any moves,” Claire said. “I like the way the team has come together and I don’t want to change it. “

Claire also said he has no plans to release Eric Davis, who appears to have lost his left field job to Darryl Strawberry. “We are going to need Eric just like we are going to need all 25 guys we have,” Claire said. “It’s not as though it’s a longshot that something is going to change. What seems to be so set in baseball can have a way of changing so quickly, sometimes it’s mind-boggling. “

Kevin Gross skipped Monday’s game to attend the funeral of his brother-in-law, Jimmy Cantrell, 19, who died of injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident last week in Riverside.

“It’s been pretty tough,” Gross said. “I stayed home (Monday), but I kind of wanted to come in here (to the clubhouse) and do my work and then go back home. I couldn’t do that, it would have been tough to leave the family. It’s just that that is how connected this team is, this is family, too. And sometimes, (baseball) can be a getaway.”

A line drive hit by Mike Piazza during batting practice struck a fan, opening an inch-long gash above his left eye. Cesar Oliva, 38, was standing in an aisle in left-center field when he was struck. “I saw the ball come out and I looked up, (but) I couldn’t put my glove up,” said Oliva, who was treated at the nurse’s station at Dodger Stadium.
