DOUBLE GOOD: Clinton’s U.S. Supreme Court nomination of Ruth Bader Ginsburg was enthusiastically applauded by Orange County Women Lawyers. At a luncheon Monday, the group honored Eileen Moore as Judge of the Year, who noted that she is among just four women--alongside 55 men--on the Superior Court here. . . . And Moore on Ginsburg: “We don’t need a gender quota. What’s important is that competent people not be held back because of gender.”

CEILING BREAKERS: Every schoolchild knows that Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross. Its local chapter will further honor her name next week with seven “Clara Barton Awards” to outstanding Orange County women. One award: for “Breaking the Glass Ceiling.” . . . . The June 24 ceremony in Newport Beach will draw former GOP cabinet member Elizabeth Dole, now Red Cross president.

O.C. II: Rudy M. Castruita, Santa Ana Unified superintendent, is among the half-dozen finalists under consideration by Gov. Pete Wilson for the state schools chief nomination. Castruita, who has earned plaudits for improvements in his diverse district, is among several Latino educators being eyed for the spot. . . . Included in his boosters: State Sen. Marian Bergeson (R-Newport Beach), the governor’s first nominee, who went down to Assembly defeat in April. Says Bergeson: “I think he is an excellent candidate.”

GET WELL SOON: What is the perfect get-well gift? In the Orange Unified School District, it’s more than a year’s worth of sick leave days. Employee Marlaine McCain, out with cancer for almost a year, had almost exhausted her salary and health benefits. But more than 300 district employees contributed individual sick leave days to help McCain out. . . . “It was a morale booster for everyone,” says Becky Mayers, of the California School Employees Assn.’s local chapter. “We work hard to get employees health benefits and she was in danger of losing hers.”
