United Airlines Considers New Carrier: The new service would fly United’s unprofitable short-haul domestic routes, a spokesman said. The spinoff is among the cost-cutting options under consideration by the nation’s second-largest carrier, which lost $957 million last year, spokesman Joe Hopkins said. No decision on cost-cutting measures is expected for at least six months, he said. In a spinoff, a company rids itself of unwanted assets by creating a separate company and distributing stock in the new company to shareholders.
