La Espanola, a tiny takeout deli featuring an array of Spanish delights, may be a bit hard to find, but it’s worth the search. Located at the end of a row of industrial units in Lomita, the establishment of Juana Gimeno de Faraone offers food dishes from her native Spain.
One of the most popular is the tipo soria chorizo ($6.85 per pound), featuring a diced pork loin mixed with lean bacon, paprika, garlic, nutmeg and black pepper and stuffed into casings and dried for two months. The result is a lean, full flavored sausage.
For a spicier variety, try the cantimpalo ($5.75 a pound), a mixture of pork and beef with cayenne and cumin.
Another big seller is the top of the line lomo embuchado entero, ($12.20 a pound) a pork eye-of-the-loin marinated in garlic, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, peppercorns, rosemary and marjoram.
Sobrasada ($4.25 a pound), a favorite in the Spanish island of Majorca, is lean pork ground to the consistency of pate. Spaniards like it spread on toast with honey on top.
Jamon serrano, a mountain-cured ham that is a staple of every tapa bar in Spain, is offered at $5.95 a pound.
Owners Juana and her husband, Frank, will gladly set out samples for customers to try before they buy.
La Espanola also offers a full range of Spanish olive oils, cheeses and saffron, an expensive spice sold here for $2.95 a gram.
La Espanola is located at 2020 Lomita Blvd., Unit 7, Lomita. Open Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (310) 539-0455.
