Bart Morefield has resigned as the Agoura High baseball coach, saying he lacked the time to revive the sagging program.

The Chargers finished 3-20 this spring and were 14-54 during his three years.

“Bart was not happy this season--he struggled,” Agoura Athletic Director John Crow said. “He was student-teaching and he’s been looking for a teaching job. He also wants to spend more time with the soccer program.”

Morefield, 29, will continue as boys’ varsity soccer coach, Crow said.

Crow and Fred Williams, vice principal in charge of athletic administration, who both coached varsity baseball at Agoura, began taking applications for the job Thursday. Morefield’s resignation came as no surprise to Crow.

“I guess some rumors got out about it, because last week I started getting calls from other coaches,” Crow said. “(Morefield) was the brunt of some parent criticism. The baseball program has struggled for three or four years with him as coach. When you coach sports that back up to each other, it’s difficult. It’s a lot of work.”

Morefield said he had high hopes when he took the job, but the demands became unrealistic.

“It was unfair to the kids and myself,” he said. “It’s too hard to do both. I didn’t realize how tough it would be when we moved into the Marmonte (League) from the Frontier. I wished we could do better. I was mad we didn’t win many games.”

Crow said Morefield expressed an interest in staying with the program as a varsity assistant or junior varsity baseball coach.

“He played baseball and soccer here as an athlete and worked in both programs,” Crow said. “I had Bart as a ballplayer when I was a coach. He’s got a lot of commitment here and he’s the kind of guy you want to have around. But the baseball program just needs a lot of rebuilding.”
