DOG DAYS: Doug Rydbeck, owner of Ojai Ice Cream, is ready to dish up the cold stuff in a city where the average July temperature tops out at 91 degrees. “It’s been hot and that’s good for ice cream,” he said. . . . The lowest high in the county: Port Hueneme, which checks in at a crisp 67 degrees. “I guess they have coffee and doughnuts over there,” he said.

JURY SPEAKS: The grand jury has released its final report (B1) and it offers some insight to where the government watchdogs have been this past year: the beach and the snack bar. . . . The report concludes that “Ventura County has the most beautiful harbors, sandy beaches, a horizon dotted with sails of boats and the most magnificent sunsets.” Jurors also weighed in on the government center cafeteria. “The refrigerators appeared and smelled clean and the food was wrapped or covered.”

BORDER BUCKS: Lawmakers have agreed to hire 600 more Border Patrol agents (A1), but officials are unsure what that means for a tiny Ventura County station so understaffed that agents routinely fail to deport illegal immigrants. . . . Rep. Elton Gallegly said the vote shows shifting support for his longtime effort to halt illegal immigration. “Whether we improve enough to make a difference is a different question for those of us who have beat the drum on this issue.”

MAYDAY: As a Thousand Oaks group tries to prevent its radio-controlled gliders from being grounded (B5), model airplane enthusiasts across the county say they are finding the skies more unfriendly all the time. “With the land out here, something is growing on it or someone is standing on it,” said Bennett Spencer, president of the Ventura County Comets.
