Basica, Lee Fall at Wimbledon

Amanda Basica of Lomita and Janet Lee of Rancho Palos Verdes lost their second-round Wimbledon girls’ doubles match to Julie Pullin and Lorna Woodroffe of Britain, 6-4, 6-0, Thursday.

As part of this weekend’s Manhattan Beach Open, the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals is conducting a four-team master’s pro beach volleyball tournament south of the pier.

Among the players scheduled to compete are former Manhattan Beach Open champions Jim Menges, Greg Lee, Steve Obradovich, Gene Selznich and Tom Chamales. The event will feature round-robin play Saturday; the final is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday.

The 28th annual Manhattan Open tennis tournament is scheduled for July 17-18 and 24-25 at the Live Oak tennis courts, Manhattan Heights Community Center and Mira Costa High.

There will be men’s and women’s singles and doubles competition. Participants must be at least 16 years old. The entry fee is $20 for singles and $30 for doubles and participants will receive a T-shirt.

Entry forms are available at Live Oak tennis courts, Manhattan Heights Community Center and the Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Dept.

The Amateur Athletic Foundation has built sand courts at six inner-city parks to conduct youth beach volleyball clinics, which begin Monday and run through Aug. 6.

The clinics are free for youths 11 to 17.

South Bay sites offering instruction and league play are Normandie Park at 22400 S. Halldale Ave. in Torrance and Rosecrans Park at 840 W. 149th St. in Gardena.

Members of the Women’s Professional Volleyball Assn. and the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals are scheduled to be instructors.

The UP Sports Kite Open will be Sunday north of the Manhattan Beach Pier.

The event will feature team and individual competition between the country’s top kite flyers.

As a finale, eight championship kite fliers will create a precision routing involving 96 kites flying simultaneously. The event will go from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
