NEWPORT BEACH : Wedge Group Seeks Beach Cleanup Help

Share

Volunteers are being sought to help a group of body surfers who regularly ride the waves at the Wedge clean up the beach next week.

Members of the Wedge Preservation Society will begin their cleanup at 10 a.m. Monday at the Wedge and proceed about two miles along the beach to the Balboa Pier. For good measure, they will also sweep the pier.

“If we get the manpower, we might go on up to the Newport Pier,” said Tom Kennedy, who runs the preservation society, which has about 200 members, mostly body surfers. “What better day to (clean the beach) than the day after the Fourth of July holiday? There is bound to be a lot of (trash) left on the beach.”

The city will be providing the cleanup crews with trash bags, “so all we need is volunteers,” Kennedy said. “We are going to have some barbecues and food and basically spend the day at the beach.”

Those interested can show up Monday morning at the Wedge, Kennedy said.
