A restaurant robbery suspect was shot and killed by police Saturday when the man reportedly ignored officers’ demands to throw down his revolver.

The man, between 45 and 50 years of age, had not been identified by Saturday night.

About 4:45 p.m., police responded to a call from a food server at an El Torito restaurant at Beach Boulevard and Edinger Avenue who told officers that a man had entered the restaurant, fired one shot and demanded money from the cash register.

No one was injured inside, but the suspect reportedly fled with an undetermined amount of money and was seen crossing Beach Boulevard by a motorcycle officer, according to police.

Police said the suspect then went inside a neighboring Arby’s restaurant, which was later surrounded by police. A short time later, the suspect left the west end of the restaurant and was attempting to escape on foot when officers called out to him.

Authorities said the man waved off police shouts to stop and then with his right hand reached into his waistband for a revolver and pointed it at an officer.

It was then that police opened fire on the man, striking him several times. Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

As is the case with all officer-involved shootings, the case has been referred to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department for investigation. Late Saturday, sheriff’s officials said they were withholding the suspect’s identity until relatives were notified.

No officers or restaurant patrons were injured in the exchange of gunfire.

Jim Cunningham, manager of the Arby’s, said employees told police that the man appeared to be intoxicated when he entered the restaurant and ordered a meal. Cunningham said the man apparently did not brandish the weapon to employees or the handful of customers at the restaurant.
