Stone Temple Pilots have recorded a jazzy version of their song “Sex Type Thing,” which will be featured on an EP due Aug. 17. Also on the five-song release will be an acoustic version of “Plush,” recorded live on MTV’s “Headbangers Ball” last month. . . .

Atlantic Records is considering releasing an alternate version of Pete Townshend’s new album “PsychoDerelict”--without the spoken dialogue between the music tracks. . . . Evan Dando and Lemonheads are recording in Los Angeles with an eye toward an October release of a new album. . . . The Kurt Cobain-produced album by the Melvins is finished and due Sept. 21.

L.A. rappers the Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E. have finished their album, due from Hollywood Records in early ’94. Judging from a few titles, it’s new territory for the Disney-owned company: “House Full of Gangsters,” “Gangsters of the Industry” and “Mad Samoan” are among the songs. . . .

Fine Young Cannibals’ first new album in more than five years is now on MCA’s schedule for November. . . . Guy member Aaron Hall’s solo debut is due Sept. 28. . . . Also due Sept. 28 is Jodeci’s follow-up to its multimillion-selling debut. . . .

Having lost singer John Corabi to Motley Crue, L.A. band the Scream has taken on both a new frontman (Billy Scott) and a new direction (an R&B-based; sound rather than hard rock). For its new album, due in the fall, the band worked with producers Mario Caldato Jr., who has worked with the Beastie Boys, and Richard Wolf, whose credits include Bell Biv DeVoe and LL Cool J. . . .

A 1985 EP by L.A. band Psi-Com--fronted by a pre-Jane’s Addiction Perry Farrell--will be reissued by the small Triple X label in September. Only 1,500 copies of the original independent release were sold. Farrell helped with new cover artwork for the reissue and supervised its remastering. . . .

Haikim Bell, a member of the new R&B; quartet P.O.V., is the son of Robert (Kool) Bell of Kool & the Gang. No, Kool Bell doesn’t make a guest appearance on the group’s debut album, “Handin’ Out Beatdowns,” which is due Aug. 3. . . . A Sisters of Mercy compilation is due Sept. 1, with a new track featuring Israeli singer Ofra Haza.
