LOS ANGELES : Homeless Man, 70, Killed by Amtrak Train
A 70-year-old homeless man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train Monday morning heading into Union Station in Downtown Los Angeles, officials said.
Amos Lee was hit by the train at 9:30 a.m. as he was crossing the tracks near Broadway and Spring Street, said coroner’s spokesman Scott Carrier. Amtrak officials described Lee as trespassing because he was found in an area where there is no pedestrian crossing.
Pending further investigation, the death is being referred to as an accident-suicide, coroner’s spokesman Scott Carrier said.
The accident delayed for several hours the arrival of the inbound No. 3 train from Chicago, officials said.
In the last local fatal accident, a 23-year-old homeless man was hit on June 22 near the Glendale station. Lee’s death marks the first fatality near Downtown in recent years, Amtrak spokeswoman Stephanie Miller said.
