A 40-year-old man was fatally shot in the chest Monday morning when he intervened as his relatives were being robbed.

The attack occurred about 9:50 a.m. when four men knocked on the door of Reginaldo and Cayetana Parra, who run a carpeting business from their house in the 700 block of East Pine Street. The men said they wanted to order carpet, police said.

Inside, one of them pulled out what investigators think was a .38-caliber handgun. They forced the husband to the floor, tied his hands and took $5,000 that was lying on a television set, police said.

At that point, Parra’s brother-in-law and co-owner of the carpet business, Pedro Cortez Millan, arrived, “saw what was happening, got into an altercation with several of the men and was shot,” Lt. Bob Helton said.

Millan was dead on arrival at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, Helton said. The Parras were not hurt.

All four robbers fled on foot and no gun was found, police said.
