WARSAW : Making the Rounds
Faced with domestic political warfare, Russian President Boris N. Yeltsin this week ventures into what was once Moscow’s guarded preserve on a trip to Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
Yeltsin is schedule to fly today to Warsaw, where he plans to sign agreements with President Lech Walesa. On Thursday, he’ll stop in Prague for talks with President Vaclav Havel.
Then it’s on to Bratislava, Slovakia. There, a cooperation agreement is planned, but one sticking point is how it will deal with the crushing by Soviet tanks of Czechoslovakia’s “Prague Spring” reforms in 1968. Yeltsin has said that independent Russia can’t be expected to apologize for acts of the former Soviet Union.
