ORANGE : Total of $270,000 in Bills Written Off
The City Council has decided to halt collection efforts in retrieving more than $270,000 in unpaid water, paramedic and other miscellaneous bills.
The city plans for this type of loss annually, said Jeanne Arehart, acting finance director.
Paramedic fees accounted for the largest chunk of unpaid bills, said city officials. Of $400,000 billed for paramedic services, the city recovered $167,000. Neighboring cities also show similar recovery rates for paramedic services, according to city officials.
Officials said the unpaid bills are chiefly the result of bankruptcies or residents and businesses moving out of the city.
