San Dimas : Contaminated Lot Cleanup

Share

After a two-year delay, the San Dimas City Council has authorized the cleanup of a contaminated lot that is part of the city’s redevelopment plan for its downtown area.

In 1991, the California Environmental Protection Agency found the soil around the former Cropper chrome-plating shop at 334 W. Bonita Ave. was contaminated with high levels of cancer-causing chromium and other materials, including lead, copper and cyanide, according to the council.

The City Council contracted Riedel Environmental Services Inc. to oversee the cleanup, which includes removing 200 tons of fouled soil. Money to pay for the cleanup will come from funds kept in escrow accounts, Assistant City Manager Ken Duran said. Costs could run as high as $39,250 if the soil is badly contaminated.

The two-year delay was caused by the large number of agencies the city had to go through to get the lot cleaned, Duran said.
