Self-Serving Democracy in Newport

Share

* Victor Jasshinski (Letters, Nov. 7) speaks about the glowing commendations of democracy in his letter (about a reuse plan for the El Toro air base).

In reference to his comments on child’s play and Third World-style politics, let us review the actions of his own community.

For many years, Newport Beach has moaned and whined over John Wayne Airport. This eventually culminated in that city suing county government over air traffic control and noise abatement.

I could find no one who recalled Newport Beach seeking the input of other cities prior to its legal action.

Civic leaders seized an issue which affected their city without regard for any impact on the rest of Orange County. Consequently all travelers leaving John Wayne must endure takeoffs at an unsafe angle of ascent.

Their suit also precluded all cargo aircraft. This situation has not only caused lost revenue, but the delay in the shipment and reception of products by local businesses.

Imagine, Mr. Jasshinski is abhorred that 15% of the population should have an impact on the El Toro reuse issue when his own city, by itself, has affected the rest of us for many years.

The most frustrating concept for Mr. Jasshinski and his cohorts to discern is that south Orange County has adopted Newport Beach’s method of politics, tactics and attitude.
