Out of the Ashes, Sound Advice on Rebuilding

Share

A 23-page booklet designed to help fire-ravaged homeowners rebuild in a fire-safe and environmentally responsible manner is being offered at a cost of $4 by the Community Environmental Council in Santa Barbara.

Titled “From Ashes to Opportunity: Rebuilding After the Painted Cave Fire,” the booklet contains practical advice and a checklist on conservation-oriented design and a list of fire-resistant plants. The book grew out a series of meeting of residents, architects, landscape architects, energy and water conservation experts, and fire agency and insurance representatives in the aftermath of the 1990 Santa Barbara fire, which destroyed more than 600 homes. The council is a 23-year-old nonprofit group.

To receive a copy of the “Ashes to Opportunity,” send a check for $4 (which includes postage and handling) to Community Environmental Council, 930 Miramonte Drive, Santa Barbara, Calif. 93109.
