No San Gabriel Valley football teams won Southern Section championships last season, but the area made a strong showing on the all-state team selected by Cal-Hi Sports magazine and the All-Southern Section teams selected by Southland sportswriters.

Miguel Meriwether of West Covina, The Times’ San Gabriel Back of the Year, and Ganesha’s Pene Talamaivao, The Times’ Lineman of the Year, were selected first-team all-state along with Muir defensive back Kenny Haslip. Bishop Amat running back Rodney Sermons and Claremont kicker Justin Ventura were selected to the second team.

Sermons was among four Bishop Amat players selected to the All-Southern Section Division I team. Receiver Daylon McCutcheon, defensive lineman Kory Minor and linebacker Ramogi Huma were also first-team selections.

Other San Gabriel Valley selections:

DIVISION II: Pasadena linebacker Andre Watkins; Muir defensive back Damond Stewart and Arcadia kicker Justin Stewart.

Division III: West Covina quarterback Meriwether and linebacker Robert Walls and Diamond Bar defensive back Thomas Simmons.

Division IV: Glendora quarterback Rob Schult, receiver Chris Speh and linebacker Mike Myers; Damien offensive lineman Kyle Thomson and Claremont’s Ventura.

Division VI: Arroyo quarterback Gabriel Agredano and receiver Chris MacMillan; Ganesha running back Orlando Washington, offensive lineman Iona Uiagalelei and defensive lineman Talamaivao; Covina quarterback Matt Kearns and linebacker Leo Asoau; Workman kicker Arturo Wong and defensive back Abel Macias; South Hills defensive lineman Caleb Lindsey; Los Altos linebacker Jake Merrill; Charter Oak defensive back Joey Strycula and Garey punter Jamie Cortez.

Division VII: Sierra Vista offensive lineman John Hartman, defensive back John Rios and all-purpose back Egmont Cervantes, and Azusa linebacker Joel Jara.

Division VIII: San Marino quarterback Dan Loyd, receiver Josh Oder, offensive lineman Hugh Home and defensive lineman Trevor Patterson; Temple City offensive lineman Brian Gardner and linebacker Andrew Constantino; South Pasadena defensive back Gavin Peries and kicker Dana Barsuhn.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Citrus College women’s basketball team enters Friday’s nonconference game against Grossmont with a 5-6 record. That might not sound too impressive, but consider that the Owls were 1-51 over the previous two seasons.

First-year Coach Ray Walker has an all-freshmen team led by former Blair standout Lataya Woods, who was twice named to The Times’ San Gabriel Valley All-Star team. Woods is averaging 21 points a game.

COLLEGES

The Azusa Pacific men’s basketball team defeated San Francisco State, 96-77, Tuesday night in the championship game of the Azusa Pacific tournament.

Azusa Pacific entered the game with a 12-2 record after senior forward Ronnie Winbush scored 21 points in a 102-76 semifinal victory over Evangel College.

San Francisco State advanced to the championship with a 92-90 victory over Occidental.

The Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball team enters tonight’s California Collegiate Athletic Assn. opener against Cal State Los Angeles with a 9-5 record, its best start since a 9-4 mark in 1985.

Pomona, under Coach Kevin Patterson, is riding a six-game winning streak after a 76-74 victory over UC Davis. Eric Jones, a senior guard, made a 10-foot jump shot with three seconds left to give the Broncos the victory.

Cal State Bakersfield, the defending NCAA Division II champion, enters CCAA play with a 12-2 record. Cal State Dominguez Hills is 9-3 and UC Riverside is 8-4. Cal State San Bernardino (7-5) and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (6-6) leave Cal State L.A. (5-8) as the only conference member under .500.

Pomona travels to Dominguez Hills on Saturday.

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team entered Wednesday night’s nonconference game against Western New Mexico with a 10-3 record.

The Broncos, in the final week of the their nonconference schedule, defeated Wayland Baptist, 90-78, on Monday night. Mildred Conston scored 35 points for Pomona, which plays Azusa Pacific on Saturday.

Conston is averaging 22.9 points and 9.7 rebounds for the Broncos.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Kelly Chavez, Bishop Amat--Chavez, a freshman point guard, was named most valuable player of the Charter Oak tournament after leading the Lancers to the championship.

Chavez scored 15 points and had six assists in Bishop Amat’s 53-27 victory over Charter Oak in the championship game.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Lawrence Phillips, Nebraska-- Phillips, a freshman from Baldwin Park, rushed for 64 yards in 13 carries and scored on a 13-yard run in the fourth quarter of the Cornhuskers’ 18-16 Orange Bowl loss to Florida State.

MISCELLANY

Seniors should start preparing for the 1994 Crown Valley Senior Olympics that will be staged April 23 to May 7 at various sites throughout the San Gabriel Valley. Competition in 22 sports and activities are scheduled. Winners qualify for the State Senior Olympics . . . The San Gabriel Valley Kids Wrestling Club is having sign-ups on Mondays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the small gym at Arroyo High in El Monte. The program, open to boys and girls ages 5 to 14, teaches fundamentals and offers the opportunity to compete in tournaments. Information: (818) 338-6864.
