Supt. Michael W. Caston of Palos Verdes school district will soon leave the area that gave him his first teaching position in 1971.

Caston will leave his post April 6 and step in as superintendent of the Santa Barbara School District on April 7.

Caston said his resignation had probably surprised colleagues.

“It’s a great opportunity to take on a bigger district and it’s a beautiful area . . . (but) it’s been a positive time here and it’s with mixed emotions that I’m leaving,” he said.

Caston grew up in Torrance and later attended El Camino College. He started his teaching career at the peninsula’s Miraleste High School and then served as assistant principal and principal in the Capistrano School District in Orange County.

From 1980 to 1990, he held both assistant superintendent and superintendent positions in the Covina School District before his appointment to Palos Verdes.
