THOUSAND OAKS : Schools to Receive Money From Project

Share

Manzanita School students will soon enjoy repaved basketball courts and Sequoia Intermediate athletes will play on spruced-up baseball diamonds under an agreement to funnel Thousand Oaks redevelopment funds to both schools.

The Thousand Oaks City Council has added both Manzanita and Sequoia to a list of three other schools that receive money from a Newbury Park redevelopment project.

Each year, the schools divvy up about $50,000 from the Redevelopment Agency, which collects money for local improvement projects through property taxes.

Past projects have included re-roofing the gym and adding two basketball courts at Redwood Intermediate School, and painting wood trim on several schools, said Sarah Hart, assistant superintendent for the Conejo Valley Unified School District.

“These aren’t big-ticket items, but they’re extra projects that there’s no (other) funding for,” Hart said. “Each year, we go through and pick a project here, a project there.”

To be eligible for redevelopment money, a school must demonstrate that 5% of its students come from the redevelopment project area, which encompasses an irregularly shaped region around Newbury Road extending from the Borchard Road exit of the Ventura Freeway to Haigh Road.

The district is studying whether Newbury Park High School and Walnut School meet the 5% guideline and may be eligible for redevelopment funds.
