World IN BRIEF : CHINA : Opposition Voiced to Pressuring N. Korea
China again frustrated hopes that it would take a strong line on North Korea’s nuclear program, telling visiting South Korean President Kim Young Sam that the crisis must be resolved through dialogue and that it opposes U.S. plans to send Patriot missiles to Seoul. President Jiang Zemin told Kim that China wants a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula to maintain peace and stability there. China, one of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, has said it opposes as counterproductive any moves by the council to pressure North Korea.
