World IN BRIEF : FRANCE : Premier Backs Off, Suspends Wage Law

Premier Edouard Balladur suspended a law that allowed employers to pay younger workers less than the minimum wage. Hundreds of thousands of young people had protested the wage law, which was intended to bring down 25% unemployment among youth. Hundreds of police officers were injured and hundreds of students arrested in the nation’s most widespread protests in two decades.
