BUENA PARK : Railroad Underpass Contract Awarded
The City Council has awarded a contract to an Irvine firm to prepare plans for constructing a railroad underpass on Dale Street and aligning the street with Burlingame Avenue.
The city on Monday gave the nearly $590,000 contract to H.D.R. Engineering Inc., one of eight firms that submitted proposals for the $9.6-million project. The money will come from county Measure M funds.
Donald K. Jensen, director of public works, said the firm is “highly preferred by the railroad and the staff” and has done other railroad grade separation projects well.
The realignment of Dale Street to Burlingame Avenue, a residential street that leads to homes in the Bellehurst neighborhood, was opposed by residents. Despite the protest, the City Council in January approved the Dale Street realignment and the rebuilding of the underpass.
Loren Tuthill, deputy director of public works, said construction is planned to begin in January.
The money for the project will come from state, county and local sources, including $5 million from the state Public Utilities Commission, which approved construction and funding of the railroad underpass in March, Tuthill said.
The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Co. will contribute $870,000.
