Dean Crowley, acting Southern Section commissioner since October, was named to the permanent post Friday, the section announced.

The Southern Section Executive Committee appointed Crowley, 60, during a meeting at the section office in Cerritos. Crowley, who has been an associate commissioner of athletics since 1987, is only the seventh commissioner in the organization’s 81 years.

He was named acting commissioner by the executive committee when Stan Thomas, the former commissioner, was forced to resign Oct. 13 after an investigation revealed he abused his expense account. Thomas became commissioner in 1986.
