4 Miami Policemen Convicted of Coverup in Dealer’s Death
Four police officers were convicted of misleading investigators to cover up a 1988 beating death of a drug dealer.
Pablo Camacho, Charlie Haynes Jr., Nathaniel Veal Jr. and Andy Watson were found guilty last week of one count of multiple charges of obstruction of justice and misleading law enforcement officers. Each faces a maximum 10 years in prison.
In 1990, the four officers were acquitted of charges they conspired to violate Leonardo Mercado’s civil rights by killing him. The verdicts sparked rioting in Wynwood, the Puerto Rican neighborhood where Mercado lived.
