President Burhanuddin Rabbani’s army launched bombing raids, ground assaults and a relentless rocket attack in a major offensive designed to drive back rival Islamic factions entrenched outside Kabul. His troops claimed advances after a day that included some of the most intense fighting since a battle for the capital resumed Jan. 1.
