LOCAL NOTES : Pietrowski Easily Advances to Sectional Tennis Final

Jakub Pietrowski of Huntington Beach, top-seeded in the boys’ 18 main draw, defeated fourth-seeded Nate Jackmon of Goleta, 6-1, 6-3, Saturday to advance to the final of the Southern California Junior Sectionals today at Los Caballeros Sports Village in Fountain Valley.

Top-seeded Joseph Gilbert and fifth-seeded Ryan Moore, both from Fullerton, will meet in the boys’ 16 final at 10:30 a.m. today. Gilbert advanced with a 6-4, 6-3 semifinal victory over Canoga Park’s Dylan Mann. Moore defeated Palm Springs’ Andrew Scorteanu, 6-1, 7-5, in the other semifinal.

Faye Devera, third-seeded in the girls’ 16 main draw, lost to top-seeded Alexandra Stevenson of San Diego, 6-3, 6-3, in a semifinal match. Stevenson will play Mugette Ahn of Los Angeles in today’s final at noon.

Pietrowski will face second-seeded Derek Pope from Ojai at noon for the boys’ 18 title.

The second “All-Star Basketball Challenge,” featuring top players from Orange County against standouts from San Diego County, will be held at 7 tonight at Del Mar Torrey Pines High School.

The Orange County all-star team is led by 6-foot-6 forward Tony Gonzalez from Huntington Beach. Among his teammates are Century’s Thomas Harmon, Pacifica’s Chris Vlasic, Orange’s Gil Gonzales, University’s Demetrius Zeigler and Santa Margarita twins Brad and Brian Finneran.

The team is coached by Santa Ana Valley assistant coach Paul Hoover.

Last year, San Diego won, 107-89.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and younger. There will be a three-point shootout at halftime, and a slam-dunk competition after the game.
