OXNARD : Computers to Aid in Traffic Citations

The Oxnard Police Department will begin using hand-held computers next week to issue traffic citations in a project with the Ventura County Superior and Municipal courts, officials said Friday.

The computers, which were donated by the courts, will increase the efficiency with which traffic tickets are processed and reduce manual data entry, officials said. It will also make it easier for officers to issue citations.

The computers will also enable Oxnard police to transfer traffic ticket information to the courts on a daily basis, giving the courts the ability to more quickly notify individuals of any bail amount due, officials said.

Both agencies hope to eventually use the computers to process misdemeanor violations such as petty theft.

The California Highway Patrol began using hand-held computers in 1990. Oxnard police are expected to begin using the equipment Friday.
