VENTURA : New Trash Bins, Higher Fees OKd
Ventura residents will get a third garbage bin for yard clippings and a bill for about $2.18 more per month from their trash collector under a proposal approved by the City Council on Monday.
The council approved the proposal by a 4-1 vote, with Councilmen Jack Tingstrom and Gregory L. Carson abstaining. Councilman Jim Monahan cast the lone opposing vote. “I think rates have gone up too much,” he said.
The city’s refuse haulers, E. J. Harrison and Sons, now pick up recyclables and non-recyclables every week. But under the new schedule, only landfill-destined trash would be picked up every seven days.
The garbage trucks would rotate collection of the two recyclable waste bins, picking up yard clippings one week and other recyclables the next.
Trash bills would go up an average of $2.18 per household, city officials say, although about a quarter of the residents would actually see a decrease in their fees.
The proposal is designed to help the city comply with state law requiring dramatic decreases in waste sent to landfills.
