PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Gandy Jumps to No. 2 at Left Tackle

Share

First-round draft choice Wayne Gandy, who has been moved up from third to second team, will start at left tackle in Saturday’s exhibition opener against the Green Bay Packers at Madison, Wis., according to the team’s depth chart.

“He’s made a move,” said Jim Erkenbeck, Ram offensive line coach. “It’s going to be hard to keep Gandy out of there. This guy can play and will play. He has that ability to turn it up a notch, that game tempo, that makes him something special.”

Gandy missed the opening of training camp while completing negotiations on a five-year contract. He remains No. 2 behind Clarence Jones, but Bill Schultz, who was working as No. 2 left tackle, has moved to right guard to challenge Tom Newberry.

Quarterback T.J. Rubley, who is battling Jamie Martin for the No. 3 spot, has been ordered by team physicians not to throw for a week to rest a sore arm.

The knee injury to starting defensive end Fred Stokes has given veteran Gerald Robinson and rookie Brad Ottis an opportunity to improve their stock.

Robinson has had eight sacks over the past two seasons, while Ottis was the team’s second-round pick from Wayne State in Nebraska.
