From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Regular exercise has been found to protect older people from a dangerous type of internal bleeding that kills thousands of elderly Americans every year, according to a study. “People who are physically active are at lower risk of having a severe gastrointestinal hemorrhage,” said Dr. Jack M. Guralnik, an epidemiologist at the National Institute on Aging in Chicago and a co-author of the study. Elderly people who exercised at least three times a week, even if they just walked or worked in their gardens, were found to be 30% less likely to suffer severe or fatal gastrointestinal hemorrhages.
