Fire gutted a two-story house surrounded by dry brush Tuesday morning, causing $300,000 in damage, the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported.

People from as far away as two miles saw the flames at the house in the 3500 block of Poppy Drive near Mulholland Highway and thought it was a brush fire, said Fire Inspector Bob Brandelli.

When firefighters arrived about 10 a.m., the house was fully engulfed in flames. It took an hour for 30 firefighters to put out the fire, Brandelli said.

Animal control officials were also called to the scene when a dead dog was found amid the ashes, he said.
