Huntington Beach officials are taking a serious look at the Police Department.

The Police Department has 230 sworn officers.

During the past decade, Huntington Beach’s population has increased from 180,000 to about 190,000. During that same period, the city’s ratio of police officers per 1,000 residents increased from 1.1 to 1.2, but it is still below the national average of 2.2.

Also during this 10-year period, calls for service increased 54%, from 75,898 to 116,727 a year.

City officials hoped to hire six new officers and a sergeant soon. But the bond crisis might put those plans on hold.
