After deliberating for nearly three days, a Ventura County jury Tuesday convicted a Port Hueneme man of fatally stabbing the manager of a local market.

Adolfo Lopez Carrillo was found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of 42-year-old Mohineer Bassi of Canoga Park.

Bassi was stabbed Aug. 19 at the B-Mart convenience store on East Pleasant Valley Road in Port Hueneme. Carrillo, 32, who had a concession contract for the meat counter at the store, denied responsibility for the murder.

After being stabbed seven times in the chest and abdomen, Bassi staggered to a nearby bar before collapsing. Witnesses testified that before he died, Bassi told three police officers that he was stabbed by “Alfonso,” a name that Carrillo went by.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Roger Inman, who prosecuted the case, also said that minutes before the stabbing, Carrillo and the victim were alone in the store.

According to testimony, Carrillo became agitated the day of the slaying after learning that the store was for sale.

Carrillo faces a mandatory prison sentence of 16 years to life.
