A week after his call for improved communication between the Spanish-speaking community and Los Angeles police, the Mexican consul general met Tuesday with police commissioners to begin the process.

After an hourlong discussion, Jose Pescador told reporters he was encouraged that the two groups could “find solutions to our common problems.”

“We want the public . . . to be sure that we represent a community that is a large community here and that we need the common effort between the Police Department and also the Mexican Consulate to achieve the result that we want,” Pescador said.

He met with commission President Enrique Hernandez Jr. and board member Rabbi Gary Greenebaum in what was promised to be the first of many meetings.

Pescador said last week he was concerned that officers were not thoroughly investigating crimes against Mexicans, Guatemalans and Salvadorans, and in doing so, alienating those residents.

“What we want is a culture of tolerance, of respect . . . and most important the efforts that together we can develop a future of cooperation,” the consul general said.
