U.S. Puts Pressure on German Public Procurement: The United States let it be known in no uncertain terms that its patience is running out with Germany over the country’s apparent bar on U.S. firms bidding for public power generation contracts. “This is a very major issue for the United States. . . . We are not going to let it alone,” Jeffrey Garten, U.S. undersecretary of commerce for international trade, told a business meeting on U.S.-European Union relations in Washington. Garten said he will press his case when he visits Germany today and Friday as part of a one-week trip to Europe.
