Shomario Richard of Nogales and Tomisha Hughes of Muir were named The Times’ San Gabriel Valley boys’ and girls’ basketball players of the year.

The players were honored at a brunch Sunday at the Pasadena Holiday Inn along with 18 other players who were selected to The Times’ 1995 San Gabriel Valley all-star teams.

Bill Duwe of Pasadena was selected boys’ coach of the year and Corrine DeJong of Muir was selected girls’ coach of the year.

Duwe, who guided the Bulldogs to the Southern Section Division II-AA title, resigned this week as Pasadena’s coach.

* The fifth annual San Gabriel Valley all-star basketball games will be played this weekend at Glendora High.

More than 60 players from 76 high schools, including 31 players who were All-Southern Section, will participate in the games. Four boys teams will compete in semifinals on Friday night at 6 and 8. A third-place game will be played Saturday at 3:45 p.m. followed by the girls’ championship game at 6 and the boys’ championship at 8.

All sheriffs, firefighters and military personnel with identification will be admitted free.

Boys’ coaches include Bob Withers of Nogales (East), Mike Swanegan of Duarte (South), Jim Wetmore of Alhambra (North) and Rocky Moore of Muir (West).

Girls’ coaches are Bill Wakeley of San Dimas (East) and Ralph Punaro of South Pasadena (West).

* Pasadena Poly’s baseball, football, boys’ tennis and wrestling teams and Westridge High’s softball team were selected as the Southern Section team academic champions for their grade-point averages.

* The California Flyers under-17 boys’ soccer team, which includes many players from San Gabriel Valley high schools, won its second consecutive Dallas Cup tournament championship.

The Flyers defeated a team from Costa Rica, 2-1, in the championship match on a goal by Josh Henderson of La Canada in the second overtime.

COLLEGES

Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team entered the week 27-23 and 13-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. by winning five games against Cal State Dominguez Hills last week.

Pomona is in third place in the CCAA, 2 1/2 games behind first-place UC Riverside and 1 1/2 games behind Cal State San Bernardino.

Noel Magpoc is batting .330 and Chad Overacker .328 for Pomona, which plays a nonconference game against Point Loma today at Pomona.

* Azusa Pacific, ranked 16th in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics, entered the week needing only one victory to clinch the championship of the Golden State Athletic Conference and earn a berth in the NAIA playoffs.

Azusa Pacific (31-8, 17-3 in the GSAC) played Southern California College in a GSAC game Tuesday.

Senior outfielder Tony Gonzalez is 11 for 17 over the past five games with three home runs and 11 runs batted in.

* Azusa Pacific’s softball team entered the week 29-16 and 12-4 in the GSAC. The Cougars can win the conference championship but they will need some help from Point Loma, Biola and Concordia Colleges.

Azusa concludes the regular season with a doubleheader against Southern California College. If Azusa Pacific sweeps and Southern California College is upset in any of its doubleheaders against the other schools, Azusa Pacific will earn the title.

Dawn Castaneda is batting .431 for Azusa Pacific and has hit safely in 29 of her last 32 games. Dawn Hebert is 8-1 and has a 0.51 earned-run average.

* Azusa Pacific’s track teams will be trying to win their fifth consecutive GSAC championships this weekend at Point Loma Nazarene.

The Azusa men’s team is led by hammer thrower Rene Bustamante, who won the event at last week’s Meet of Champions at Azusa Pacific with a throw of 202 feet, 5 inches.

The Cougar women are led by sprinter Fatima Yusuf. Denes Balasz is coming off a school-record 4:09.07 performance in the mile and Jaime Martinez qualified for the NAIA outdoor championships with a time of 3:50.09 in the 1,500 meters.

* Tennis players from colleges and community colleges in the San Gabriel Valley will compete this week in the Ojai Invitational, a multilevel event that begins today and runs through Sunday.

PREP OF THE WEEK

John Tuttle, San Marino--Tuttle pitched a three-hit shutout as the Titans took over first place in the Rio Hondo League with an 11-0 victory over Temple City.

Tuttle’s performance helped San Marino improve to 14-1 and 7-1 in league play.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Tony Gonzalez, Azusa Pacific--Gonzalez hit a three-run home run in the first game and a grand slam in the second game of a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader against Point Loma.

Don Neefe, 85, of Pasadena won the 100-yard freestyle in his age division at the Crown Valley Senior Games, which opened last weekend at five venues throughout the San Gabriel Valley. Mike Noritake, 71, of Los Angeles, set a meet record in the 5,000-meter race walk by finishing in 33 minutes, 33.4 seconds. The games have attracted more than 1,300 athletes ages 50 and over. Competition continues this weekend with tennis and racquetball at the South Pasadena Racquet Center, in-line skating at the Rose Bowl and basketball at Ambassador College. * John Wooden, who guided his UCLA basketball teams to more NCAA championships than any other coach, will be the featured speaker when the El Monte Union High School District inducts Don Johnson into its Hall of Fame. Johnson, a 1948 graduate of El Monte High who played for Wooden at UCLA, compiled a record of 259-58 as a basketball coach at Cypress Community College and won state titles in 1977 and 1980. * The 29th annual Mt. Wilson Trail Run will be staged May 27, beginning in Sierra Madre. The 8.6-mile race features an elevation gain of almost 2,100 feet. Entry is limited to 300 competitors. Information: (818) 355-2355.

CALENDAR

A 5-K run/walk sponsored by the GeoSpace Academy at Muir High will be staged at 8 a.m. May 13 at the Rose Bowl. The race is sanctioned by U.S. Track and Field.

The run/walk will precede a “Voices of Harmony” picnic at Brookside Park.
