Countywide : Board Approves Irvine Co.’s 8,000-Unit Housing Development
County supervisors have taken a step to move beyond the bankruptcy crisis and set the stage for future growth by approving a development of up to 8,000 housing units near Irvine and Tustin.
The board Tuesday unanimously approved the planning documents for the sprawling 1,400-acre development known as the Lower Peters Canyon Project. In addition to the housing units, the planned community project will include commercial and industrial uses. The project is being developed by the Irvine Co. and is bordered by Jamboree Road, Portola Parkway, Culver Drive and the Santa Ana Freeway.
“This project will help to jump-start the economy in Orange County as we emerge from the recession and the bankruptcy,” Supervisor William G. Steiner said.
About half a dozen members of the North Irvine Village Assn. spoke in opposition to the project, complaining that it was too dense.
