PREPS

The Muir High boys track team continued its dominance by winning its third consecutive Southern Section championship last weekend.

Sophomore Obea Moore led the Mustangs by winning the 200 and 400 meters and anchoring the winning 400 and 1,600 meter relay teams.

Moore and other qualifiers from the divisional championships will compete this weekend in the Southern Section Masters Meet. Winners advance to the State championships.

* The San Marino boys’ volleyball team made history last week when the Titans swept St. John Bosco and advanced to the Southern Section Division III semifinals for the first time.

Tony Skogen had 23 kills for the Titans, who played second-seeded Village Christian in the semifinals on Wednesday night.

* Several San Gabriel Valley-area high schools won first round games in the Southern Section playoffs and played second-round games on Tuesday with hopes of advancing to Friday’s quarterfinal round.

Bishop Amat, seeded fourth in Division I, defeated Arcadia, 2-1, in a showdown between two of the area’s top teams.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Golfer Mark Watson of Citrus College was named Foothill Conference player of the year by league coaches.

Watson shot a two-round 155 in the Southern California Regional Championships earlier this month. Teammate Ryan Fowlkes, who was selected All-Foothill Conference, was low medalist for the Owls at 148.

COLLEGES

La Verne University opens play today in the NCAA Division III World Series at Salem, Va.

La Verne (35-8) advanced to the World Series by sweeping Cal Lutheran in three games in the West Regional last weekend in La Verne.

La Verne first baseman Jeff Polinsky was named most valuable player of the regional after getting nine hits in 14 at-bats.

* Azusa Pacific’s baseball team finished 35-12 after being eliminated from the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics Far West regional at Lewiston, Ida.

* Seven athletes from Cal Poly Pomona will take part in the NCAA Division II track and field championships today through Saturday at Emporia State University in Kansas.

Shotputter Nicole Beauregard, Cliff Curtis (3,000-meter steeplechase, 5,000), Dominique Hughes (triple jump, long jump, 100 meters), Rondie Gibbs (5,000, 10,000), Rosetta Hunter (800, 1,500), Jodie Warr (discus) and Mike Torres (javelin) will compete for the Broncos.

* Azusa Pacific will play host to the NAIA outdoor track and field championships today through Saturday.

More than 800 athletes from about 100 schools will participate. Azusa Pacific has 22 men and 13 women competing in the meet.

* Tracy Nguyen of Cal Poly Pomona was named women’s player of the year in the West region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Assn.

Ann Lebedeff, men’s and women’s tennis coach at Pomona, was named men’s coach of the year after leading the Broncos to their second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division II tournament.

* Outfielder Noel Magpoc and pitcher Robert Price of Cal Poly Pomona were selected All-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. by league coaches.

Magpoc batted .333 with 24 runs batted in and 23 stolen bases. Price, a junior, was 6-4 with a 2.40 earned-run average.

PREP OF THE WEEK

Obea Moore, Muir--Moore, a sophomore, won four events at the Southern Section divisional track and field championships, helping the Mustangs to their third consecutive championship.

Moore won the 200 and 400 meters and anchored victorious 400 and 1,600-meter relays.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Jeff Polinsky, La Verne--Polinsky, a first baseman, was named most valuable player of the NCAA Division III West regional after leading the Leopards to a sweep over Cal Lutheran.

Polinsky was nine for 14 in the series and had a home run and three-run triple on Saturday when the Leopards swept a doubleheader to win the best-of-five series.

MISCELLANY

David Hutchens of Whittier finished with a three-under-par 285 to win the Pasadena Amateur golf tournament last weekend at the Brookside course. Hutchens, who led by three strokes entering the final round, shot a 70 on Sunday to win the tournament.

* A United States Slow-Pitch Softball Assn. tournament is scheduled to be staged Friday through Sunday at Almansor Park in Alhambra. The 27th Worth Memorial begins with a home run derby on Friday night.

* A youth football coaching clinic, featuring presentations by some of the most successful high school coaches in Southern California, will be staged July 15-16 in Pasadena.
