Outfielder Derek Bell and the Houston Astros avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to a $1.45-million, one-year contract, more than triple his 1994 salary of $385,000. . . . Texas Ranger outfielder Juan Gonzalez, sidelined the entire season because of a herniated disk in his lower back, made his first appearance in an extended spring training game, going four for nine with a home run. . . . Cincinnati Red catcher Benito Santiago underwent surgery to remove loose fragments and debris from his right elbow and will be sidelined at least three weeks.
