SANTA PAULA : Briggs Trustees Scold County School Board

Share

The Briggs School District Board of Education has sent a letter to the Ventura County school board, chastising it for banning Planned Parenthood and AIDS Care speakers from sex-education workshops.

“It is our belief that educators must have as much information as possible on any subject when they are teaching,” the board said in a two-page letter.

“It is then the teacher’s responsibility to comply with district curriculum guidelines when instructing the students,” says the letter.

Board members added that they are “dismayed” by the county school board’s March 27 action barring Planned Parenthood and AIDS Care from teacher training workshops put on by the county.

“By doing this, you have deprived educators of the opportunity to become well-informed on subjects they are required by law to teach.”

The Briggs district board oversees one school in Santa Paula.

County school board President Wendy Larner was not available for comment late Friday. But she and other county school board members have said they intend to put together a consortium of doctors who will provide information on sex education and AIDS prevention to teachers.
