SEEKING JIMMY: Habitat for Humanity workers in San Fernando will keep an eye out for former President Jimmy Carter beginning Saturday during a project to build two homes. Carter will visit Los Angeles from Saturday to June 24 to lead volunteers working on several Southland Habitat projects. . . . Carter hasn’t yet included the San Fernando site on his itinerary, but one worker there said, “The mood is hopeful.”

CAMERA MUGGING: Saying television cameras have “shed more heat than light” on the O. J. Simpson murder trial, County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky wants court officials to ban cameras from any Simpson retrial. But Yaroslavsky has no trouble with the camera on himself: He fought to keep televising supervisors’ meetings--at a yearly cost of $300,000 (B1).

IRISH FIX: North Hollywood resident Tom McConville, above, is more than just a radio host. For the Southland’s Irish community, he’s a way of life. . . . McConville’s 25-year-old radio show, “The Irish Hour,” provides a lifeline to events in Ireland and local Irish-related happenings. “He’s the missing link with home,” one listener said. LASER SIGHT: Call it “Laser Tag: The Next Generation.” . . . Ultrazone in Sherman Oaks has taken laser tag to new levels by adding snazzy vests, a maze-like playing field and the latest in laser-firing hardware. Despite lingering frustrations, the game’s advances over the late 1980s have lured a new breed of players. See Valley Life!, Page 22

SHE’S LEARNING: Lydia Nolasco--the teen-age mom from San Fernando High who defied the odds to earn her diploma--has now earned something new: support. . . . A Times story about her prompted several votes of confidence from readers: One offered to help her find a job and another offered a scholarship to Valley College. Said Nolasco: “It’s so nice that all of these people who don’t even know me really want to support me.”
