Special to the Times

Fighting in the mountains between Turkey and Iran killed at least 30 Turkish soldiers and Turkish Kurd rebels Wednesday, adding to growing border tension between the countries.

Turkey has warned Iran of its belief that the separatist Kurdistan Workers Party is again operating out of bases inside Iran. The Turks have suggested a joint operation with Iran against the insurgents.

Failing that, they want permission for the Turkish army to mount an operation similar to its six-week anti-rebel raid that sent 35,000 troops into northern Iraq in March.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Alaeddin Boroujerdi promised to help contain the rebels but played down the idea of any kind of joint operation.
