PLANNING : City Council OKs Temple Expansion

Share

A plan to expand Mt. Sinai Temple at Beverly Glen and Wilshire boulevards was unanimously approved by the Los Angeles City Council this week.

The project at 10400 Wilshire Blvd., which includes the purchase of neighboring residential property, would add 82,000 square feet to the temple. A 528-car parking lot, 28 classrooms, an auditorium, an 8,000-square-foot kitchen and a rooftop playground are planned.

Some residents criticized the plan, saying it would increase noise and traffic. But the Westwood Homeowners Assn. withdrew its appeal of the project after a compromise was reached, including the installation of a traffic light at Beverly Glen Boulevard and Ashton Avenue, and the restriction of left turns onto Holmby Avenue from Wilshire Boulevard. However, other residents feared that the expansion would allow the temple to hold more weddings and banquets and would significantly increase traffic in the area.

Temple officials say the expansion was needed to provide more child care and additional programs.
