SIMI VALLEY : Parking on Royal May Be Limited

A jump in traffic and resulting safety concerns may lead the Simi Valley City Council to prohibit parking on portions of Royal Avenue.

The City Council will vote today on a resolution to prohibit parking on sections of the road, allowing engineers to add a center turn lane.

Over the last 20 years, traffic on the residential street has jumped from about 6,000 cars a day to about 21,000, city officials said.

With the speed limit set at 45 m.p.h., city engineers worry that it has become hazardous to turn left onto residential streets or driveways along Royal Avenue.

To put in the 12-foot-wide center turn lane, the engineers will have to eliminate parking on both sides of the roadway, said Ron Coons, director of the city’s Public Works Department.

Although the new configuration will prevent many homeowners from parking on the street in front of their homes, Coons said after notifying all the residents along Royal Avenue that only a handful complained.

“Actually, we received a lot of calls supporting the idea,” Coons said.

The Simi Valley City Council will consider adopting a resolution on the plan at its meeting today, which begins at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.
