The Houston Astros, looking to add power behind the plate, acquired catcher Rick Wilkins from the Chicago Cubs in a trade for outfielder Luis Gonzalez and catcher Scott Servais.

Wilkins, who hit 30 home runs in 1993, has struggled this season. He is batting .191 with six homers and 14 RBIs.

Pitcher Dwight Gooden, who has said he would like to join the New York Yankees after his drug suspension ends, will not be reinstated this season, the New York Times reported. . . . The Philadelphia Phillies activated right-hander Tommy Greene from the 15-day disabled list and optioned first baseman Gene Schall to Scranton-Wilkes-Barre. . . . The players’ union has filed a grievance against the Kansas City Royals for not allowing second baseman Jose Lind to rejoin the team. Lind has been on the disqualified list since June 2, when he left the team without permission after his wife served him with divorce papers.
