LIMA : No. 2 for Fujimori
Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori begins a second term on Friday, Peru’s independence day. Several Latin American presidents will attend the inauguration ceremonies. Among those invited is Cuba’s Fidel Castro.
Fujimori, 56, won the April 9 elections with more than 64% of the vote, and his political alliance won 67 of the 120 seats in a new, single-chamber Congress. Voters were endorsing his administration’s success in crippling the once-powerful Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) guerrillas and in reforming the economy.
But the president is not without challenges. Critics worry about his close relations with the army and what they call his authoritarian tendencies.
