Southeast/Long Beach : ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING

Share

Plans for a hunting trip ended in tragedy Monday night when a Compton teen-ager was accidentally shot and killed by his 24-year-old future brother-in-law. Police say that about 7 p.m., Steven Chavez, 15, was at home examining a shotgun that he, his 18-year-old brother and their sister’s fiance intended to take on hunting trip. The fiance, whose name was not released, had little knowledge of guns and apparently caused the weapon to discharge accidentally, authorities said.

The blast hit Chavez in the chest. He was dead by the time police arrived at the scene several minutes later.

Capt. Steven Roller of the Compton Police Department said investigators will wait for a coroner’s report to determine whether there was any foul play, but that evidence so far supports the family’s story that it was an accident.
