NAME CHANGE: Simi Valley resident Greg Moses suggests renaming the city’s main thoroughfare in honor of Michael Clark. Moses, who years ago supported an unsuccessful drive to change the city’s name to Santa Susana, thinks Los Angeles Avenue’s name should be dropped in favor of Clark, the first Simi Valley cop to die in the line of duty. . . . “It’s a nice idea, but you’d have to find the right street,” says Mayor Greg Stratton, adding that it would be easier to choose a street in a new housing development.

JOYFUL NOISE: The Ventura County Mass Choir was a big hit when it performed at the 28th annual Gospel Music Workshop last week. . . . The 55-member group, which sang two songs penned by choir founder Stacey Dillon of Oxnard, entertained a crowd of more than 5,000--one of its largest audiences to date. “We were nervous and shocked at the response,” says Felicia Nickelberry, business manager for the nearly 2-year-old choir. “People were on their feet, clapping and cheering us on. It was a rewarding experience.”

WARNING WALL: Drivers on Oxnard Boulevard now have a double anti-drug message (B4). Neighborhood children have painted a colorful anti-smoking mural to reinforce that “Fumar es Morir” (‘Smoking Is Death”). . . . “We don’t need anyone destroying our lives. As Latinos, we need to stay healthy,” said local physician Felipe Santana, who spoke at the mural’s unveiling. The new artwork is next to another mural on an auto repair shop that decries drinking and driving.

BEING WITH YOU: R & B legend Smokey Robinson will be doing what he loves most--performing--when he hits the stage at the Ventura County Fair tonight. “Smokey would rather be on a stage giving a live performance than recording, or anything else,” says longtime manager Michael Roshkind, former vice chairman of Motown Records. . . . The singer enjoys playing county fairs, he says, because it allows “everyone to have a chance to see him.”
