WORLD IN BRIEF : EGYPT : 2 Suspected Militants Killed, 49 Arrested
Egyptian police shot dead two gunmen and arrested 49 people in one of the largest security sweeps on Muslim militants in months, the Interior Ministry said. A ministry spokesman told reporters that Ezzat Mohammed Ali Metwali and Ragab Sayyed Attiya, leaders of Gamaa al Islamiya (Islamic Group), were killed by gunfire during a dawn raid on their headquarters in the Cairo suburb of Helwan. Group members were apprehended before carrying out a plan to open fire and hurl grenades at thousands of applicants at a police academy recruitment office.
